Ancient Sudan Research Foundation

The Foundation’s philosophy is grounded in a respectful and responsible approach to the archaeological heritage of Ancient Sudan as an integral part of world history. We view the research, preservation, and interpretation of the monuments of Meroë not only as a scholarly endeavor, but also as a form of cultural dialogue between the past and the present. The Foundation’s work seeks to unite academic rigor, openness of knowledge, and international cooperation in order to preserve and thoughtfully interpret historical heritage for future generations.

The city of Meroë was one of the most important political, economic, and religious centers of the Kingdom of Kush and played a key role in the history of Ancient Sudan. Owing to its strategic location and developed urban infrastructure, Meroë became a major center of craftsmanship, trade, and metallurgy, linking the interior regions of Africa with the Mediterranean world and the Nile Valley. Archaeological research at the site is of fundamental importance for understanding the processes of urbanization, cultural interaction, and state organization in Northeast Africa.
